The main objective of the OptHYmize project is to reduce the energy consumption required for HydroSil production by a factor of 5. This will be achieved through the implementation of a simplified synthesis process.
To do so, research and development efforts are being undertaken within the company to improve the efficiency of the chemical reaction by reducing the number of steps involved and using innovative technologies.
Thanks to the implementation of new prototypes and testing, it is possible to significantly lower the energy cost of HydroSil production.
This project is supported by the European Union’s FEDER program.

Pilot & Demo
The RESHIP project, which began on September 1, 2022, focuses on redefining energy-saving solutions for both newbuilds and retrofitted marine and inland waterway vessels by incorporating disruptive technologies in two key areas: Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) and onboard hydrogen utilization.
By leveraging the innovative and energy-efficient hydrogen carrier technology, HydroSil, RESHIP connects ESD technology with research on hydrogen utilization aboard ships. This integrated approach aims to reshape hydrogen-powered vessels with a comprehensive energy-saving solution.
The project’s primary objective is to achieve a minimum of 35% overall energy savings and reduce hydrogen storage demands—whether in terms of space or weight—by 50%, compared to the current state-of-the-art hydrogen-powered ships.

QualifHY, an ambitious and innovative initiative led by HSLTechnologies, Enogia, Helion and ENSAM, has reached a decisive stage in the hydrogen energy sector.
These three pioneering companies, winners of the PSPC (Projet Structurant Pour la Compétitivité) programme in 2021, have joined forces to accelerate the development of the hydrogen ecosystem in the south of France.
After several weeks of rigorous trials and coupling tests, HSL and Helion have successfully integrated a fuel cell using hydrogen released from a silane compound (HydroSil). This achievement underlines the potential of the QualifHY project to revolutionise the storage and use of hydrogen, marking significant progress towards sustainable energy solutions.
This project would not have been possible without the generous support and funding of BPI France, the Région Sud, and the Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence. Their commitment to advancing the hydrogen sector has been essential in enabling this ground-breaking work.
Feasibility study & Transportation
11.2021 — 09.2024
Hamburger Hafen und Logistik Aktiengesellschaft (HHLA) intends to become climateneutral by 2040 as part of its sustainability strategy and intends to use hydrogen to do so.
Also, HHLA is well positioned to take advantage of the new opportunities in hydrogen import and transportation because of its network of ports and connections that extend into the European hinterland.
To confirm the interest to collaborate, HSL and HHLA Hamburg decided to enter into a feasibility study phase in order to evaluate the costs and supply chain needed for three different use cases, using HydroSil to transport hydrogen

The project, launched in partnership with Société du Pipeline Méditerranée-Rhône (SPMR), is an ongoing feasibility study that began on November 29, 2023.
Its goal is to test the compatibility of HydroSil with existing infrastructure for transportation through pipelines. SPMR, a long-standing specialist in pipeline infrastructure for conventional liquid fuels, is guiding the study by identifying the appropriate materials for compatibility tests and defining the acceptability criteria for the results.
This project specifically tests HydroSil’s compatibility with metals, ceramics, plastics, air, water, and refined products. The study was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with our partner, SPMR.
Coaching
07.2024 — 07.2027
The support provided to HSL Technologies by the Région Sud, as part of the CEDRE Ambition program, offers assistance at both strategic and operational levels. HSL will benefit from a comprehensive assessment of its development projects, aimed at identifying the best opportunities for growth and innovation.
An expert in CSR and ecological transition will assist HSL in conducting a comprehensive diagnosis and formulating a three-year action plan. Additionally, this support includes a six-month follow-up to ensure progress and adjustments to the proposed actions.
The CEDRE Ambition initiative also opens access to apply for CEDRE Investissement, further enhancing HSL’s capabilities in navigating the path towards sustainability.

Port of Amsterdam, Evos, Electriq Global, Hydrogenious and HSL Technologies have joined forces to investigate the technical and commercial feasibility of importing and storing hydrogen on an industrial scale. The parties are jointly working on a blueprint for an import, storage, distribution and trading hub, consisting of facilities with a total throughput capacity of 1 million tons of hydrogen per year.
Moving to overcome the challenges with transporting and storing compressed and cooled hydrogen, the H2 Gate project is exploring several hydrogen carrier technologies in parallel, also to determine potential energetic and operational synergies between them. Subsequent studies into design and realization, including pilots, are conceivable.
Pierre-Emmanuel Casanova, CEO and co-founder of HSL Technologies: “H2 GATE is a great opportunity for HSL Technologies. Besides proving all the advantages that our molecule HydroSil could bring in a port hub, we will collaborate to the deployment of hydrogen together with major players of the sector. We feel honoured to be part of such an ambitious project.”

HydroSil is aimed to big energy companies aiming to supply hydrogen to the market. This solution allows them to use the existing logistic infrastructure for fossil fuel, thus revolutionising the hydrogen delivery sector. Our innovation will have a disruptive impact in the mobility sector as it has the potential to remove the barriers that currently prevent a wide deployment of hydrogen-based applications by tackling safety, regulatory and supply chain issues.
HSL Technologies was created with the objective of developing and exploiting this new technology which is based in a recent scientific discovery. Properly industrialised, it has all the ingredients to become a game changer in hydrogen distribution industry, enabling the deployment of a hydrogen economy.
The overall objective of the project is to be ready to commercialise our disruptive technology among major energy companies.

The Sun-To-X Horizon 2020 project will contribute to the European Commission’s targets for clean energy for all and circular economy by developing a system for the conversion of solar energy into storable chemical fuel that will be used in the energy and transport sectors.
The objective is to convert the solar energy into a non-toxic, energy dense, liquid fuel that can be used in the energy and heating sectors.
Water is needed as an input in almost all solar fuel electrolysis processes, so it is limited to areas which can meet large liquid water supply. By using humidity instead, the technology can be expanded even to deserts.
